AVIF vs WebP

AVIF often wins on compression. WebP wins on encode availability in the browser. ConvertPass exposes AVIF encode only after a capability check.

If both encode and decode work in your audience’s browsers, test AVIF for photo-heavy pages. Keep WebP as the wider fallback. Do not assume canvas encode exists.

Compression

AVIF. Usually the smaller photo at a given quality.

WebP. Still excellent, and faster to encode in many tools.

Browser encode via canvas

AVIF. Inconsistent. Detect it.

WebP. Common in Chromium; verify elsewhere.

Decode

AVIF. Current major browsers, with older exceptions.

WebP. Very broad among current browsers.

CMS and email

AVIF. More likely to be rejected.

WebP. More likely to be accepted.
